Opening hours and relative services

Library opening hours:
From Mondays to Fridays, 8.15 a.m. – 7 p.m. Saturdays 8.15 a.m. – 1.30 p.m
From 7 April 2025 and until further notice, access to the library has been modified in accordance with the indications in the announcement published on 4 April 2025, changing the address of the entrance, which is now at no. 2 Via Magliabechi, and the times at which the closing bell is sounded.

At 6.30 p.m., from Mondays to Fridays, and at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, at the sound of the bell, visitors are invited to return any materials they are consulting, vacate the halls and remove all their personal items from the lockers, in order to allow operations for the closure of the library to proceed.

Restricted opening hours

In accordance with art. 28 of Presidential Decree no. 417 of 5 July 1995, the library is closed to the public for the first and second week of August.
During this period, information and borrowing services, as well as catalogue consultation, are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For the rest of the month of August, the library is open from

  • Mondays to Fridays: 8.15 a.m. – 1.30 p.m.
  • 24 and 31 December: 8.15 a.m. – 1.30 p.m.

Closures

  • every Sunday
  • on national holidays
  • on 24 June – Patron Saint’s day

Loans

Loan opening times have been extended as of 19 May 2025

  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (requests to be submitted by 11.30 a.m.)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, until 5.30 p.m. (requests to be submitted by 4.30 p.m.)

New hours for loan returns only

As of Friday 18 December 2020, and until further notice, loaned books may be returned to the Library Porter at no. 2 Via Magliabechi.

Distribution of doctoral theses (from 1996 onwards)

  • the third Thursday of the month at 2:00 PM

Requests are accepted until 12:00 PM on the Monday preceding the distribution day.

The service is suspended during the month of August.

2026 distribution dates: Thursday 19 February, 19 March, 16 April, 21 May, 18 June, 16 July, 17 September, 15 October, 19 November, 17 December.

Distribution of doctoral theses (from 1987 to 1995)

  • Wednesdays at 1 p.m. (requests must be made by 6 p.m. on Mondays)

Due to warehouse refurbishment works, the distribution of doctoral theses up to 1995 has been suspended: please contact the Consultation hall for further information

Flood-damaged material

  • The documents in the library’s online catalogue (OPAC) for “flood-damaged” access may be requested by all users with access to the Manuscripts and Rare Books Hall, after having logged in (access may be requested by writing to bnc-fi.manoscritti@cultura.gov.it).
  • Documentation traceable through the dedicated inventories or via other printed sources may be requested by writing to bnc-fi.manoscritti@cultura.gov.it. Users will receive an email confirming receipt of their request and, in the event that the material requested is available for consultation, a further email informing them of the date from which the material will be available from the Manuscripts and Rare Books Hall.

Save for specific conditions of preservation, the relative material will be available for consultation for a maximum of two weeks.
