New subject indexing system

test

The New subject indexing system is the Italian subject indexing tool created by the National Central Library of Florence for the entire network of Italian libraries and, in particular, for those operating within the National Library Service (SBN). It is managed by the Research and subject indexing tool sector of the BncF.

General information

The New subject indexing system replaces the Subject indexing system for the catalogues of Italian libraries (1956) and its relative amendments, and has been used by the Italian National Bibliography (BNI) since 2007.

The New subject indexing system can also be used for archives, media libraries, museums and documentation centres. It adheres to the principles set out by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and ISO standards regarding indexing, and is subject to constant verification.
The main component of the system is the general Thesaurus (75,300 terms as of March 2025), which is subject to constant development, with the contribution of the BNI and other institutions.
The Thesaurus is:

  • linked to the library information held in the catalogue of the BncF and of other libraries.
  • interoperable with archive and museum databases.
  • available in standard formats and protocols.
